John W. Underwood served on the USS Lexington as a radio operator and tail gunner on a TBM Avenger torpedo bomber during WW II. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, among many other medals, for “heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight” during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. He died on 01/26/2025 at the age of 100.
